Modeling Perceptual Attention in Virtual Humans
نویسنده
چکیده
This paper describes our efforts to model perceptual attention in virtual humans for the joint synthetic battlefield. With the exception of the work by Reece et al. [19,20] to develop individual combatants, current computer generated forces represent entities at the platform level, hence, the perceptual model of these entities is typically a composite representing the behaviors of multiple humans (e.g., a tank crew). With the growing interest in developing realistic models of human behavior for military simulations [16], a greater emphasis is placed on understanding and representing the behaviors of individual crew members. A composite model of perception and cognition may not be sufficient to provide the desired level of fidelity in a simulation. To be realistic, a model needs to be both psychologically plausible and capable of generating believable behavior. In this paper we describe our efforts to support such capabilities through the development of a flexible, integrated model of perceptual attention in a synthetic helicopter pilot. The model has been developed in a synthetic helicopter pilot [8,9] implemented in Soar, an integrated cognitive architecture.

Modeling Dynamic Perceptual Attention in Complex Virtual Environments
An important characteristic of a virtual human is the ability to direct its perceptual attention to entities and areas in a virtual environment in a manner that appears believable and serves a functional purpose. In this paper, we describe a perceptual attention model that integrates perceptual attention that mediates top-down and bottom-up attention processes of virtual humans within complex v...

متن کاملPerceptual Attention in Virtual Humans: Towards Realistic and Believable Gaze Behaviors
Virtual humans, like real humans, need to perceive their environment. They need to be aware of situations in their world so that they can perform tasks, react to contingencies, interact with other agents (both virtual and human), plan, and make decisions about what to do next or at some future time. Humans develop a knack for directing their gaze toward the right objects in the environment at t...
متن کاملSituation Awareness with the Limited Visual Attention
Situation awareness (SA) is the perception of the elements in the environment within a volume of time and space, the comprehension of their meaning, and the projection of their status in the near future (Endsley M. 1988). A critical aspect of the situation awareness (SA) problem is that agents must construct an overall view of a dynamically changing world using limited sensor channels. For inst...
متن کاملWhat's Going on? Multi-sense Attention for Virtual Agents
When designing virtual humans, it is imperative that the virtual agent behave in a human-like fashion. In certain circumstances, this requires agents to be bounded in their ability to sense and understand the environment. To this end, we create a methodology that provides perceptual attention based on a linear combination of senses. We use different heuristics on the object and events that can ...
